FUNCTIONS In the wake of the low-fat, low-cholesterol diet craze, we must remember that not all fats are bad. Some fats are not only food for you, they are essential for health. These are the essential fatty acids or EFA’s.
Because of our high intake of vegetable oils which are generally high in linoleic acid (omega-6), most Americans get plenty of the omega-6 EFA’s. Some people, however, have trouble converting linoleic acid to gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) which supports production of the anti-inflammatory prostaglandin E1 (PGE1). Good sources of pre-formed GLA include borage oil and evening primrose oil.
Americans are more likely to have low levels of the omega-3 EFA’s. One of the richest vegetable sources of the omega-3 alpha linoleic acid is flax seed oil.
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docasahexaenoic acid (DHA) can be produced from alpha linolenic acid, but the process is not always efficient. Pre-formed EPA and DHA are abundant in oils from cold water fish.
Both EPA and DHA are used to support cardiovascular health. The FDA’s qualified health claim, allowed on foods and supplements containing EPA and DHA but not alpha linolenic acid, states:
“Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary health disease.”
DHA is one of the most prevalent fats in the human brain and retina. It is important as nutritional support for both development and maintenance of brain and retinal tissues.
Omega 9 fatty acids can be created by the human body from unsaturated fat and are, therefore, not considered essential in the diet.
INDICATIONS Omega-Well is a high potency liquid fish oil supplement from Norway. It is molecularly distilled for purity and has a natural lemon flavor with no aftertaste. Convenient for higher dosing, one teaspoon supplies 1400 mg of omega 3 fatty acids including 740 mg of EPA and 400 mg of DHA. 7 fl. Oz.
SUGGESTED USE Adults take 1teaspoon daily and children take ½ teaspoon daily preferably prior to meal or prior to bedtime.
